Visiting to New Zealand :

New Zealand is a great place to visit.

You may want to come here for a short time simply to enjoy the New Zealand experience. You may want to visit before deciding whether you’d like to live here. Maybe you want to visit family and friends. Or perhaps you want to attend business meetings or a special event such as a sports or cultural meet.

A Visitor's Visa is an endorsement (sticker/stamp) you get in your passport to allow you to travel to New Zealand. It shows you have permission to travel to New Zealand and may be granted a Visitor's Permit when you arrive.

A Visitor's Permit is an endorsement (sticker/stamp) placed in your passport at the airport which allows you to visit New Zealand. It will state the expiry date of your permit.

If you are a citizen of one of the following countries which have visa waiver agreements with New Zealand, you do not need to apply for a Visitor's Visa if you plan to visit New Zealand for 3 months or less.

Austria Israel Norway
Belgium Italy Portugal *
Brunei Japan Singapore
Canada Kiribati South Africa
Czech Republic Korea (South)Spain

British citizens and other British passport holders who have evidence of the right to live permanently in the United Kingdom, may be granted a Visitor's Permit valid for 6 months on arrival.

Visa waiver visitor must:

  • hold a valid ticket to a country you have the right of entry to; and
  • have sufficient money to support yourself during your stay; and
  • hold a passport valid for 3 months beyond the date you are leaving New Zealand; and
  • only wish to visit New Zealand for the time granted on arrival (if you wish to visit for a longer period you will need to apply for a Visitor's Visa).

A visitor may stay a total of 9 months in an 18 month period.

If you stay a total of 9 months in the last 18 months you are required to remain out of New Zealand for 9 months before returning as a visitor.

You can apply for a further 3 months to give a total stay of 12 months. You may qualify for a further 3 months if you have financially supported yourself, not worked or studied or been sponsored throughout your stay. If you stay a total of 12 months in the last 24 months, you are required to remain out of New Zealand for 12 months before you can return as a visitor.

    Medical Insurance is strongly recommended.

Visitor permit holders are generally not eligible for publicly funded health and disability services. People covered by New Zealand’s Reciprocal Health Agreements with Australia and United Kingdom are entitled to publicly funded health care for immediately necessary medical treatment only.

You are strongly advised to have comprehensive health insurance for the duration of your visit.
