Visiting Visa to Australia
Australia's temporary entry, student and visitor programs aim to help those wanting to enter Australia from overseas.
General visa information
A visa or travel authority is permission or authority granted by Australia for foreign nationals to travel to Australia.
All travellers, except New Zealand citizens, must obtain a visa or travel authority before travelling to Australia.
A visa will be a stamp or label in a passport; a travel authority is an electronic record authorising travel into Australia.
Visa conditions
All temporary visas are issued with conditions. Some conditions restrict employment or relate to studies.
All conditions listed on the visa must be observed or there is a real risk the visa may be cancelled and that you will be required to leave Australia.
Conditions in Australia
If you plan to come to Australia, you are encouraged to research topics such as living costs in Australia, employment conditions (if applicable to your visa category) and medical insurance.
Visa costs
There can be visa-related costs associated with your travel.
These must be paid when you apply for your visa or travel authority. Please note that whatever the outcome of your application, this charge is non-refundable.
Some visa categories will also require a medical examination, a character clearance, and/or a certified translation of some documents.
If you would like to go to Australia for tourism, seeing your relatives or friends, pre-arranged medical treatment or short - term study (3 months or less) and your intention is not to work during your stay, you may very well apply for visitor visa.
You can choose one of the following categories :-
- Short Stay Visitor - allows you stay in Australia for 3 months or less.
- Long Stay Visitor - generally allows you stay in Australia for more than 3 months, usually 6 months. There can be exceptions in certain circumstances, for instance, in respect to aged parents visiting children (up to 1 year stay) or parent caring for young child while involved in formal studies.
- Medical Treatment - allows you stay in Australia for either elective or emergency medical treatment. You can choose Short Stay Medical Treatment visa (up to 3 months) or Long Stay Medical Treatment visa (more than 3 months).
How do I apply?
You should get the relevant application forms to complete the visa application and submit them to the nearest Australian mission. You must provide a valid passport with your application as well as other documents required, depending on which visa class you apply for.
- You should be of good health and good character.
- You may also be required to pay a non-refundable charge.
Can I extend my visitor visa?
It depends. Generally, if you need to stay longer you must apply for your visa to be extended before your visa expires. However, you will not be allowed to extend your visa if your purpose is to complete a course of study or start a new course, since you should complete your study course within 3 months after your arrival.
If you have a Medical Treatment visa you can apply for a further visa if the medical treatment must continue. Or you can also apply for a further visa for tourism, seeing friends or studying if your medical treatment has been completed.
Am I eligible for a Medical Treatment Visa?
To be eligible you are to fulfil one of the following:
- You should make arrangements for medical treatment or for consultations in Australia and make prior arrangements to pay for it.
- Your condition should not pose a threat to public health in Australia; your medical treatment or consultation should not disadvantage any Australian citizen or permanent resident.
- You should have enough funds to support yourself during your stay.
How long can I stay?
You are allowed to stay for the period of your medical treatment and to travel to Australia once only on this visa.

Health requirements
All applicants for a visa to Australia must meet health requirements. This can be done in a variety of ways depending on the type of visa applied for and the intended duration of stay. In some cases we will request a declaration of good health by the applicant. Other applicants will be required to undergo medical screening including a chest x-ray.
Interviews
Although a personal interview is not generally required, it may be required in some cases and you will be advised if and when to attend for interview.
Visa Application Charges
Please note that fees and charges are non-refundable, even if applications are withdrawn or refused.
Documents
Documents not in English must be accompanied by an English translation.
Please provide original documents plus copies of all the original documents (originals will be returned to you when your application has been assessed).
Inquiries
Comprehensive information is available in written form from the DIMIA website and the Mumbai and New Delhi Visa Offices. You should obtain and read this carefully before applying. The Visa Offices are not able to provide personal counselling to individuals about their prospects for obtaining a visa.
Please do not phone to find out about the progress of your case if it is within the usual processing time. Unnecessary inquiries take up time and delay the processing of visa applications including yours.
Email is the preferred method for essential inquiries to the New Delhi and Mumbai Visa Offices.
Return of documents/passports
Documents and passports are returned to the applicant by courier. Courier charges are included in the TT Services fee paid when applications are lodged through a TT Services collection centre.
Events and conferences
If you are planning an international event in Australia the International Event Coordinators Network (IECN) can assist Australian sponsors/organisers with information about the visa aspect of event planning.
Electronic Travel Authority
Nationals of some countries (not including India, Nepal or Bhutan) are eligible for an Electronic Travel Authority (ETA). ETAs may be available from your airline agent or can be obtained from Visa Offices. There is no application form for the ETA and you need only present your passport.
