Eligibility for the SIR (Provisional) Visa - Victoria

Sponsorship by the Victorian Government

The Victorian Government is responsible for deciding which skilled migrants are eligible for sponsorship under the scheme.

The Skilled Migration Unit within the Department for Victorian Communities manages the sponsorship process.

Eligibility for sponsorship

Skilled migrants will be considered for sponsorship by the Victorian Government based on the following criteria:

Appropriate skills and experience to have a reasonable opportunity to find employment in the region identified. The Victorian Government will obtain advice from a Participating Agent located in the relevant regional area on employment prospects for the skill set and qualifications.

Commitment to living and working in an area of Victoria outside metropolitan Melbourne.

Consideration of whether you have:

- sufficient funds to establish yourself in Victoria while you seek employment.

- any connections with regional Victoria through family, friends, previous travel, study or employment.

- identified and investigated employment and other opportunities in a regional area.

How do I apply?

If you are interested in applying you must :-
  1. Complete the Victorian Government’s Skilled Independent Regional (SIR) Visa – Application Form.
  2. Provide a current CV.
  3. Applications will be received by the Skilled Migration Unit and then assessed against eligibility criteria.
If your application is successful, you will be contacted by the Victorian Government and asked to Complete the DIMIA form State/Territory Sponsorship - Skilled-Independent Regional (Provisional) Class.

Undertake a further skills assessment if your occupation is regulated in Victoria.

Grant of a visa by Department of Immigration and Multicutural and Indigenous Affairs

Department of Immigration and Multicutural and Indigenous Affairs decides the eligibility of skilled migrants for visas under the scheme.

Eligibility requirements :-

Skilled migrants must ::
  • Be under 45 years of age at the time of lodging the visa application.
  • Have at least a vocational level of English.
  • Nominate a skilled occupation on the DIMIA Skills Occupation List (SOL).
  • Obtain a positive skills assessment.
  • Achieve at least 110 points on the Points Test.
  • Have recent work experience.

Applying for Permanent Residency

While holding a SIR (Provisional) visa, you must have resided in an area of Victoria outside Melbourne for at least two years AND been employed for at least twelve months during this period.

You can then apply for one of the following three visas:

Regional Sponsored Migration Scheme - RSMS

State/Territory Independent (STNI)

State/Territory Sponsored Business Owner

What if I have not met the criteria?

If you have been unable to satisfy either the residential or employment requirements, either of the following will occur:

You can apply for one more SIR (Provisional) visa provided that you can demonstrate that you have attempted to comply with visa conditions OR

If it is determined that you have made no attempt to satisfy your visa conditions, no further SIR (Provisional) visa will be granted and you will be required to leave Australia.
